Dr. Cynthia Cabral
Dr. Cabral is a NYS licensed clinical psychologist. In their work with clients, Dr. Cabral sees their role as breathing fresh air into the unexplored corners of your mind and standing with you as you encounter the parts of yourself that you have not met. Dr. Cabral makes therapy a place where you can become the most authentic version of yourself by supporting you in clarifying your values and discovering how past and present traumas may shape how you currently move through the world. Dr. Cabral has a vibrant interpersonal style that people who are uncertain about therapy really connect with.
As an Afro-Caribbean, non-binary psychologist, Dr. Cabral will sometimes incorporate the wisdom of Dominican “dichos,” or aphorisms that they grew up with into the therapeutic conversation. They manifest the therapeutic concept of “building life worth living” in the therapeutic space by engaging clients in conversations around queer joy and gender euphoria. Dr. Cabral is also trained as a Level I and II Reiki practitioner, and will incorporate elements of energy work and somatic healing practices at clients’ request.
Dr. Cabral has extensive training and experience across community based school settings, settings focused on academic research and clinical care for queer and gender diverse clients, and partial hospitalization programs. As such they are able to support adults, adolescents and couples who are struggling to manage trauma, depression, anxiety, and self-harm. Dr. Cabral has also developed expertise in working with neurodiverse clients (i.e., ADHD, Autism Spectrum). Dr. Cabral’s approach to working with neurodiversity consists of supporting clients in identifying the ways that their environments do not support their functioning, using somatic based interventions to address overstimulation and burnout, validation regarding the challenges of being a neurodiverse person in a neurotypical world, and social skills training if requested by the client. Dr. Cabral believes in meeting clients with compassion, humor, cultural humility and a genuine interest in their treatment goals. They use an integrative approach, including Motivational Interviewing, DBT, CBT, and trauma-focused interventions.
In addition to their clinical work, Dr. Cabral is an expert in Motivational Interviewing and HIV prevention with queer and transgender populations. As such, they provide Motivational Interviewing training to sites such as Columbia’s ICAP program and Flushing Hospital Medical Center and participate on panels and conferences concerning LGBTQIA sexual health.
