ACCEPTANCE & COMMITMENT THERAPY
What is Acceptance
& Commitment Therapy (ACT)?
Like DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a third wave CBT treatment, meaning that mindfulness/acceptance is infused into the spirit of the approach. ACT encourages individuals to accept what is beyond their control and commit to actions that enrich their lives, guided by their deeply-held values. By focusing on the present moment and fostering psychological flexibility, ACT emphasizes helping clients pursue a life aligned with their values.
How are
ACT and CBT
Different?
Rather than changing thought patterns, ACT encourages people to accept the discomfort that some thoughts elicit, and understand that having uncomfortable thoughts can sometimes be out of a person’s control. ACT then invites clients to use mindfulness skills to decide whether acting on a thought is or is not in alignment with your goals and values. ACT is a particularly effective approach when managing “sticky” thoughts that occur in obsessive thinking, OCD and Chronic illness/pain.
